Khmer New Year at DDP

On Friday, the Basic Education program at Deaf Development Programme kicked off Khmer New Year with activities for its students. Friday was the last day of school for them so in the afternoon the teachers showed them how to play traditional games, sharing cultural knowledge that some students may not have had access to before because of their language barrier.

Khmer New Year isn’t all fun and games for the teachers in DDP’s Basic Education program though. The students went home on Friday but this week has been a week of in-service training for the teachers. For this training, DDP teachers all convened in Phnom Penh to learn new pedagogical techniques and share their expertise with each other.

The teachers enjoyed a few days together, discussing their work and learning from each other, as well as outside experts. They are looking forward to when the students return from their holiday with their families because the building seems so empty without the earnest young men and women in their white shirts and blue skirts or pants.
