Introduction of deaf football team

One of the challenges and one of the goals of the Maryknoll Deaf Development Programme is to bring together deaf people from all parts of Cambodia and from different backgrounds so that they acquire a sense of deaf identity and of deaf community.  One vehicle for accomplishing that is sports, and today the first deaf football team was introduced to Phnom Penh.  Composed of young men formerly or presently associated with Krousar Thmey deaf schools and the Deaf Development Programme, the team is connected with neither.  With funding from the Finnish Association of the Deaf, the Phnom Penh Deaf Warriors made their first appearance in their new uniforms at a launch party on Saturday morning.  The whole community is excited about this team which has been invited to participate in a league with hearing teams, and now some of the women are asking if a women’s football team can be established.
